Co-Washing/Shampooing

What is co-washing?
Using a conditioner instead of shampooing. Co-washing nourishes and moistens hair but does not cleanse unless you purchase a co-wash with cleansing properties. Personally, I often co-wash 2-3 times a week (or when needed) and shampoo twice a month to remove build up.
The result is something between squeaky-clean and second-day hair—that is, smoother, softer, and easier to manage.
Why co-wash?

  • Puts moisture in without stripping.
  • Great smelling hair.
  • Reduces breakage.
Now with the pros come the cons. Here are a few cons of co-washing. To much co-washing can lead to build up because conditioners are not cleansers. Just as if you were to not use soap but instead washing your body with lotion. Build up will occur unless your conditioner has cleansing properties. Hair is unable to absorb moisture due to build up and if your hair cannot absorb moisture, the purpose is defeated.

Why Shampoo?
A clean scalp

People tend to step into the shower, get there hair a little wet and just go straight into shampooing. WRONG! Make sure your hair is completely saturated before you shampoo. Stand under water stream 2-3 minutes. Be as gentle as possible using finger tips, not nails. Do not over shampoo, when you over shampoo, you're stripping the hair of its natural oils causing more damage. In replacement of washing hair you can also "co-wash"(read more in the co-washing section)
